Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about exporting, backing up, and archiving your iMessages with iExporter.

🚀

Getting Started

What is iExporter?

iExporter is a free macOS app that lets you export, back up, and archive your iMessage conversations directly from your Mac. It reads the Messages database stored locally on your computer and saves your texts as plain text, CSV, or HTML files, all packaged in a ZIP archive you can store, share, or print.

No cable, no iPhone backup, no account, and no subscription required.

How do I download iExporter?

Download the latest version directly from iexporterapp.com. Open the DMG file and drag iExporter to your Applications folder.

What are the system requirements?

iExporter requires macOS 12 Monterey or later. It runs natively on both Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) and Intel Macs. No account, subscription, or internet connection is required.

Is iExporter free?

Yes. iExporter is completely free. No ads, no trials, no feature gating, and no per-device licensing fees. Export unlimited conversations with unlimited messages.

How Is iExporter Different?

How is iExporter different from other iMessage export apps?

Most iMessage export tools are general-purpose device managers that bundle dozens of features you don't need. They typically require a full iPhone backup via USB (which can take an hour or more), cost $30 to $50 per license, and include bloated interfaces designed for power users.

iExporter is purpose-built for one thing: getting your iMessages exported fast. It reads the Messages database already on your Mac via iCloud sync, so there's no backup step, no cables, and no waiting.

iExporterOther Tools
PriceFree$30 to $50+
iPhone backup requiredNoYes (1+ hour)

Export speedSecondsMinutes to hours
Account requiredNoLicense key

How does iExporter compare to taking screenshots?

Screenshots mean scrolling, capturing, scrolling, and capturing again, hundreds of times for long conversations. You end up with a pile of image files with no searchable text, no structured timestamps, and no easy way to organize them.

Attorneys and courts increasingly prefer structured text exports over screenshots because they're searchable, sortable, and include complete metadata. iExporter does in seconds what would take hours of screenshotting.

How does iExporter compare to Apple's built-in Print/PDF?

The macOS Messages app lets you print a conversation to PDF via File then Print, but it's limited. You can't batch-export multiple conversations, there's no CSV option for analysis, and very long conversations often render poorly. iExporter gives you multi-format export, batch selection, attachment copying, and clean output, all in one click.

Why would I use iExporter instead of a paid tool?

Most paid tools charge $30 to $50 per license, require a full device backup before you can access messages, and bundle features you don't need. iExporter is free, reads messages instantly from iCloud sync, and focuses entirely on clean, fast exports. For most people who just need their texts in a file, it's all you need.

Setup & Permissions

Why does iExporter need Full Disk Access?

macOS protects the Messages database behind a privacy permission called Full Disk Access. Without it, no app can read your texts. This is an Apple security feature, not something specific to iExporter. Granting Full Disk Access allows iExporter to read (not modify) your Messages database.

How do I grant Full Disk Access?

  1. Open System Settings (Apple menu, then System Settings)
  2. Go to Privacy & Security, then Full Disk Access
  3. Click the + button
  4. Find and select iExporter
  5. Make sure the toggle is on

iExporter will detect the permission automatically. No restart needed.

Does iExporter modify my Messages database?

No. iExporter opens the database in read-only mode. It cannot add, edit, or delete any messages. Your conversations remain exactly as they are.

📱

iPhone Messages

How do I get my iPhone messages onto my Mac?

If your iPhone and Mac are signed into the same Apple ID with Messages in iCloud enabled, your iPhone texts are automatically synced to your Mac. No cables, no iTunes, no Finder sync needed.

To check: on your iPhone, go to Settings, then [your name], then iCloud, then Messages, and toggle on. On your Mac, open Messages, then Settings, then iMessage, and check "Enable Messages in iCloud."

Do I need to plug my iPhone into my Mac?

No. Unlike tools that require a USB connection and a full device backup, iExporter works wirelessly through iCloud sync. Your texts are already on your Mac and ready to export.

Why are some of my iPhone messages missing?

  • Messages in iCloud isn't enabled on one or both devices
  • Sync hasn't completed yet. Large histories can take hours.
  • Messages were deleted before iCloud sync was enabled
  • Very old messages from before iCloud Messages was turned on may not be available

Does iExporter work with SMS/green bubble texts and group chats?

Yes to both. If SMS texts are synced to your Mac via Messages in iCloud, iExporter can export them just like iMessages. Group conversations are exported with each participant's name or phone number identified alongside their messages.

Exporting

What export formats are available?

  • Plain Text (.txt): Simple, readable log with timestamps and sender names. Opens on any device. Smallest file size.
  • CSV (.csv): Spreadsheet-friendly with columns for date, time, sender, direction, message, attachments, and service. Great for Excel or Google Sheets.
  • HTML (.html): Styled conversation view with iMessage-style blue/gray chat bubbles. Opens in any browser. Best for printing or court presentation.

What's the best format for legal or court purposes?

HTML is the most presentable. It shows conversations in a familiar chat layout with timestamps and sender identification that's easy for judges and juries to follow. CSV is ideal when attorneys need to search, filter, or sort across thousands of messages. Many legal professionals export in both formats.

Does iExporter include attachments?

Yes. Check "Include Attachments" before exporting. Photos, videos, documents, and other files are copied into a subfolder within the ZIP archive. Attachments are only included if they're still stored locally on your Mac (not offloaded to iCloud).

Can I export all conversations at once?

Yes. Click "Select All" to select every conversation, then export. They'll all be included in a single ZIP file with each conversation as a separate file inside.

🔒

Privacy & Security

Does iExporter store my data?

No, absolutely not. iExporter does not store, save, cache, or retain any of your message data. Ever.

Everything is processed in real-time on your device and written directly to the export file you create. Once the export is complete, iExporter holds nothing. We have no servers storing your data, no cloud database, no analytics backend, and no way to access, read, or see anything on your Mac.

Your messages stay on your device and your device only. The exported files exist solely on your Mac in the location you chose. We never see them and have no ability to access them.

Does iExporter send my messages anywhere?

No. iExporter is 100% local. Your messages are read from your Mac's database, processed in memory, and saved to a file on your device. No data is ever transmitted to our servers, the cloud, or any third party. You can verify this yourself using Activity Monitor or Little Snitch. You'll see zero outbound connections.

Does iExporter collect analytics or usage data?

No. There is no telemetry, no analytics, no crash reporting, and no tracking of any kind. The app does not phone home. We don't know how many conversations you have, how many messages you export, or how often you open the app.

How is this different from apps that upload my data?

Some message export tools require you to upload data to a cloud service or create an account. iExporter is the opposite. Everything runs locally, nothing is uploaded, and we literally cannot see your messages even if we wanted to. There is no server, no database, and no account system on our end.

Troubleshooting

iExporter says "Cannot access Messages database"

This means Full Disk Access hasn't been granted. Go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Full Disk Access, and add iExporter. If already added, try toggling it off and back on, or remove and re-add it.

The app shows 0 conversations

  • Confirm Full Disk Access is granted and the status bar shows green "Connected"
  • Check that the Messages app on your Mac actually has conversations
  • If you recently enabled Messages in iCloud, wait for the initial sync to complete

Some messages show as blank

This can happen with very old messages or those synced from older macOS versions. iExporter handles multiple database formats, but edge cases can occur. If you see many blank messages, email Andrew@AndrewLee.Ventures with your macOS version.

💡

Use Cases

Can I use iExporter exports in court?

iExporter produces timestamped, unaltered exports of conversations as they appear in your Messages database. Many users export messages for legal proceedings, family law, business disputes, and compliance. Admissibility depends on your jurisdiction and applicable rules of evidence. Consult your attorney about proper authentication.

Can I use iExporter for business record-keeping?

Yes. If you communicate with clients, vendors, or colleagues over iMessage, iExporter lets you archive those conversations for compliance, billing documentation, or dispute resolution. The CSV format is ideal for integrating message records into existing business workflows.

Is it legal to export my own messages?

Exporting your own messages from your own device is legal. However, exporting messages from someone else's device or account without authorization may violate federal and state privacy laws. Only export messages from accounts you own or are legally authorized to access.
